Herring is an oily fish[2] found in the shallow, temperate waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Salted Herring roe (Kazunoko) has been a traditional gift and holiday item for the Japanese market for a hundred years. Grand Hale has a strong and established position in both volume and quality.

For approximately 10 processing days in March, Gill net and Seine Pacific Herring are caught, brine frozen and placed into cold storage. Shortly thereafter the herring are thawed; the crunchy golden roe is extracted and processed, then graded and packed into 38-pound plastic pails with 100% brine.
